Commentary
Commentary Funerary stele acquired around 1613 by Peiresc in Aix, but which probably comes from Marseille or its region (exact place unknown). Lost, then found again. It is possible that the name of the deceased was engraved on the first line or appeared just before the epigram. The final Latin formula implies that the deceased was from Marseilles, hence the lack of ethnicity.  The versified text evokes the death of a young man, a sailor, who died before getting married, but not at sea.
