Commentary	Opposite the terrace of the lions lies the Lake (GD 56). Mentioned by Herodotus (II 170), by Euripides (Iph. Taur. 1104), by Callimachus (Hymn Apol. 59). It extended towards the sanctuary of Apollo and was probably part of the sanctuary of Leto. It was drained in 1925 for sanitary reasons. Face à la terrasse des lions s'étend le Lac (GD 56). Mentionné par Hérodote (II 170), par Euripide (Iph. Taur. 1104), par Callimaque (Hymne Apol. 59). Il s'étendait alors vers le sanctuaire d'Apollon et faisait probablement partie du sanctuaire de Léto. Il a été asséché en 1925 pour des raisons de salubrité.

Commentary

Large white marble base broken into two fragments, bearing two metrical texts celebrating Philostratus of Ascalon as an evergetes in Delos. Found in the Sacred Lake, it refers to the dedications that he made and that legitimate the erection of his statue on the Agora of the Italici. The text is fragmentary, but Peek offers, as usual, a complete reconstruction, about which one must read the critical remarks of J. & L. Robert in the BE. This text brings together two signed epigrams, one by Antipater of Sidon (l. 1-13), the other by Antisthenes of Paphos (l. 14-26). We record here only the insured attestations, without taking into account Peek's renditions, which are too uncertain.
Grande base de marbre blanc brisée en deux fragments, portant deux textes métriques célébrant Philostrate d'Ascalon comme évergète à Délos. Trouvée dans le Lac sacré, elle se réfère aux offrandes qu'il a faites et qui justifie l'érection de sa statue sur l'Agora des Italiens. Le texte est fragmentaire mais Peek en propose, comme à son habitude, une restitution complète, au sujet de laquelle on lira les remarques critiques de J. & L. Robert dans le BE. Ce texte rassemble deux épigrammes signées, l'une d'Antipater de Sidon (l. 1-13), l'autre d'Antisthène de Paphos (l. 14-26). Nous n'enregistrons ici que les attestations assurées, sans tenir compte des restitutions de Peek, trop incertaines.
