Robert (1978) linked this epithet, exclusively Dionysiac, to a place called Παράβολος deriving from the fishnet (βόλος). Łajtar (I.Byzantion) followed his path, yet giving a more generic sense to the epithet ("near the fishing place"). On the links between Dionysos and fishing, see Lebreton (2021). Chaniotis (EBGR 2000) suggests that the epithet could mean "deceitful", which is indeed a trait attributed to Dionysos, or "near the gate" (cf. Hsch., s.v. βόλος· θύρα [actually, the edition of Latte & Cunningham, β786, gives βόλος· θήρα, which favours Robert's interpretation]); both hypotheses seem less convincing (SL). Robert (1978) rattachait cette épithète, exclusive de Dionysos, au toponyme Παράβολος dérivant du filet de pêche (βόλος). Łajtar (I.Byzantion) suit le même chemin en donnant toutefois à l'épithète un sens plus générique ("près du lieu de pêche"). Sur les liens entre Dionysos et la pêche, cf. Lebreton (2021). Les hypothèses de Chaniotis (EBGR 2000) qui propose d'interpréter l'épithète comme "trompeur", trait il est vrai caractéristique de Dionysos, ou comme "près de la porte" (cf. Hésychios, s.v. βόλος· θύρα [de fait, l'édition de Latte & Cunningham, β786 glose le terme par θήρα et non par θύρα, ce qui va dans le sens de l'interprétation de Robert]) semblent moins convaicantes (SL). |
