| Commentary |
The name of the god known only through Greek and Latin transcriptions consists of Baal (bʿl) and an element from the root rqd, "to jump, to dance", which does not seem to be attested in Phoenician until now. For some people, mrqd would be the name of the place, thus a toponym.
