According to Robertson (2005), p. 93-95, ἱππόλυτος or ἱππόλυτον (‘horse-unbridling’) would have originally refered to a place (the Kolonos Agoraios or a part of it?) where the horsemen arriving in Athens would have unbridled their horses.
