Commentary
|
Stratonikeia honours its protectors, the great gods Zeus Panemerios and Hecate, who in the past have repeatedly saved the city, and whose sanctuaries were declared inviolable (l. 3: asula) by the Romans because of the clear manifestations of these gods (l. 4: prophaneis enargeias). Statues of the gods (l. 5: agalmata) have been set up in the bouleuterion. The people offers sacrifices (l. 6 : thuei) to them, burns incense (l. 6 : epithumiai), addresses prayers (l. 6 : euchetai) and shows its gratitude (l. 6 : eucharistei), in particular through hymns (l. 7 : humnôdias).
