Commentary The divine name Madbachos is the Greek transcription of the Aramaic mdbk', «altar», in the absolutus state, not the status constructus, suggesting a translation as Zeus Altar and not Zeus of the altar. This kind of representation is present in the region with the Greek version Zeus Bômos (IGLS II, 652) and outside Syria in Dodona (Zeus Naos of RAO VII, p.81). Selamanes was originally a Semitic divine name, similar to the Assyrian god Shulman, who was honored for at least since the end of the second millennium. Silmai and Nidbai, i.e. Selamanès and Madbachos (ndbk' alternating with mdbk' in Aramaic) are still associated as angels of baptism and guardians of the Jordan by the Mandaeans (Lidzbarski, 1915, p. XX). Moreover, an obelisk of Sidon bears a Phoenician dedication to the god Shalman (Gubel 2002, p. 86, no. 78).
Le nom divin Madbachos est la transcription en grec de l'araméen mdbk', « autel », à l'état absolu, non à l'état construit, ce qui suggère une traduction du type Zeus Autel et non Zeus de l’autel. Ce type de représentation est attesté dans la région dans la version grecque Zeus Bômos (IGLS II, 652) et, en dehors de la Syrie, à Dodone (le Zeus Naos de RAO VII, p.81). Selamanès est à l'origine un nom divin sémitique, assimilable au dieu assyrien Shulman, qui serait honoré depuis au moins la fin du IIe millénaire. Silmai et Nidbai, c'est-à-dire Selamanès et Madbachos (ndbk' alternant avec mdbk' en araméen) sont encore associés comme anges du baptême et gardiens du Jourdain ches les Mandéens (Lidzbarski, 1915, p. XX). Un obélisque de Sidon porte aussi une dédicace phénicienne au dieu Shalman (Gubel 2002, p. 86, n° 78).
