Commentary The divine name Madbachos is the Greek transcription of the Aramaic mdbk', «altar», in the absolutus state, not the status constructus, suggesting a translation as Zeus Altar and not Zeus of the altar. This kind of representation is present in the region with the Greek Zeus Bômos (IGLS II, 652) and outside Syria in Dodona (Zeus Naos of RAO VII, p.81). Selamanes was originally a Semitic divine name, akin to the Assyrian god Shulman, who was honored since at least the end of the second millennium. Silmai and Nidbai, i.e. Selamanès and Madbachos (ndbk' alternating with mdbk' in Aramaic) are still associated as angels of baptism and guardians of the Jordan by the Mandaeans (Lidzbarski, 1915, p. XX). Moreover, an obelisk of Sidon bears a Phoenician dedication to the god Shalman (Gubel 2002, p. 86, no. 78).
