Commentary
Commentary Zeus Oromasdes. God of day and sky, Ahuramazda is identified with Zeus by the Greeks; in imperial times, on Mithraic monuments, it is called Caelus aeternus Jupiter and Caelus. The Royal Necropolis of Armenia is joined to a shrine of Aramazd, and its foundation is attributed to the Arsacians by legend. In this attestation the god is invoked as the possessor of the heavenly thrones, the «sublime spaces of the ether, where the supreme god sits».
Apollo Mithras Helios Hermes. The syncretism of the late 1st century BCE identifies Mithras, the special protector of the Persian kings with the Sun; some of the Mithraic monuments of the Roman era assume the same identity, others show a very close relation between the gods. If he is the Sun, Mithras is for the Greeks Apollo and Helios. It is also called Hermes, because the planet attributed by the Persians to Mithras is attributed by the Greeks either to Apollo or to Hermes. He’s also a psychopomp.
Artagnes Heracles Ares. This is the god Verethragna of the Avesta, Vahagn of the Armenians, Bahram of the Persians, identified by Heracles. The same star is for the Persians that of Bahram, for the Greeks that of Heracles or that of Ares.
Commagene. The fertility of the homeland is noted by Strabon XVI 2.3 and the relief on the reverse of which is engraved the inscription IGLS I 32 represents the Tyche of the Commagene, crowned with spikes.
