Commentary The sequence is structured in three sets probably related to the Syrian cults established in Rome by Elagabalus on the Palatine, namely Sol, Venus Caelestis and Pallas Athena. The first set associates the Sun, Elagabalus with Phren, a manifestation of the Egyptian solar god, known by amulets. The second set associates Aphrodite, under her name Kupria, Chari and Nazaia, which could refer to deities of the Arabian Peninsula. The third group includes Athena, her Arab correspondent Allath (cf. already Herodotus I, 132 and III, 8), a possible qualification of Laodikeika (uncertain restitution), perhaps in relation to the city of Laodice, and finally Genneas, a Syrian solar deity attested near Homs, who, according to Photios (Bibl. 348a), was venerated in Heliopolis in the form of a lion in the temple of Zeus.
